Welcome to the Center for Learning. The Center for Learning computers are dedicated to students’ learning in support of their higher education. The environment is designed to provide a high level of support for learning-with learning coaches, assistants, and faculty members available to assist students.

  1. The work stations near the “O.P.E.N. Learning” check-in desk are reserved for O.P.E.N. students. Reserved O.P.E.N. stations are pre-designated with the bright pink “flags.” O.P.E.N students are enrolled in Center-based credit courses.
  2. Some computers have “special” software that is not available on all computers. If the need arises you may be requested to relocate to another computer, so the software may be utilized by another student.
  3. There are two Macs located at the back of the room in the northwest corner. Both of these have graphics software utilized by Visual Communications students and are connected to the Art Lab Server.
  4. Food and beverages are not allowed in the Center computer area. The study room in the Center for Learning and the student interaction area are available for food and beverage consumption. Please discard all waste in the garbage cans and wipe off the tables in these areas.
  5. Chat Rooms, instant messenger programs, and games are not permitted in the Center for Learning as the Center for Learning’s mission is to support student learning.
  6. Printing costs 10 cents per page and must be paid before you leave the Center (O.P.E.N. students are prepaid for printing for their O.P.E.N. course work only. All other work printed including online course work must be paid for.) Deposit printing money in the container provided next to the printer. The staff person on duty can make change. Color printing, available for 50 cents per page, must be paid prior to printing. Please see a Center staff member for assistance.
  7. The college’s computers and software may not be used for any business venture for which there are any payments for time or products.
  8. Installing software on Center for Learning computers is not allowed. Any violation of software copyright laws is considered a felony and may be punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.
  9. Sharing of student login, usernames/passwords, is prohibited per the NMC Computer Usage Policy. Students may log into and use one computer at a time.
  10. Due to the learning-related work environment provided by the Center, children are not permitted. Cell phones are to be turned off prior to entering the Center and cannot be used in the Center for Learning.
  11. State and federal laws and subsequent legal interpretations mandate that a public environment, such as a school or workplace, be free of sexual harassment. When materials considered by some to be offensive, such as sexually suggestive pictures, nudity, explicit sexual language, in addition to other behaviors, interfere with the comfort of others, a sexually intimidating or hostile environment may be created. Please be considerate of others concerns as well as the law in your use of computers and materials in a public setting. Do not ever use the Center’s computers for displaying sexually oriented material, either as pictures or text. If a staff member observes a screen which s/he believes could be interpreted by others as offensive, s/he will ask you to leave the site immediately or leave the Center. A second offense will result in a loss of privilege to use the Center.

By agreeing to the NMC Computer Use Policies and the Center for Learning Computer Use Guidelines, I acknowledge an understanding of these guidelines, policies, and agree to abide by them. Failure to comply with all of these expectations may result in a loss of computer privileges.
