NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) Teaching and Leadership Excellence Award

The history of community colleges is filled with statements of mission and purpose that emphasize teaching excellence. No institution of higher learning more requires such a priority in its mission given the almost impossible task of serving all students who enroll through the doors of "open access." Beginning in 1978, NISOD has emphasized this important responsibility through conferences, workshops, and publications. NISOD endeavors to reinforce the primacy of teaching and to celebrate both instructors and programs that make good on the promise of the open door.

In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony, held in conjunction with the annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence. The response to that ceremony was so positive that it has become a celebratory tradition.
