Elliott earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University and a Masters in Science Education, specifically in chemistry and physics, from the State University of New York, Buffalo. Prior to joining NMC she worked as a nuclear shift test engineer for the Department of the Navy (1983-91) and then as a high school chemistry teacher in the Buffalo area (1998-2001).
Biology instructor Dr. Keith Overbaugh, a faculty member since 1989, and chemistry instructor Mary Jo Elliott, a faculty member since 2001, were named the winners. NMC is one of more than 700 community college members of NISOD, the National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development. Affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin, NISOD has made the teaching excellence awards to faculty at member institutions since 1989. Nominees are judged on criteria include commitment to learning, professionalism and relationships with both students and colleagues.
Overbaugh earned a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Michigan State University in 1973 and practiced in the area until 2005. He ran his own practice, the Elk Rapids Animal Clinic, until 1988, when he started teaching. Between then and 2005 he assisted other local veterinarians. Overbaugh also was NMC’s 2007 Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award winner, an award chosen by a student selection committee.
