CIE Mission & Responsibilities

  1. Mission Statement
    The Center for Instructional Excellence supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives, promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement of excellence.
  2. II. Advisory Board
    1. Purpose
      1. To promote and encourage excellence among faculty by fostering faculty knowledge, awareness, and the application of effective, innovative, and creative techniques for learning and teaching.
      2. To advise the Vice President for Educational Services on operational matters regarding the Center for Instructional Excellence.
      3. To review the effectiveness of the Center for Instructional Excellence in meeting its mission.
      4. To make recommendations for continuous improvement of the Center for Instructional Excellence.
      5. To oversee the distribution of professional development resources.
      6. To facilitate on-campus professional development activities.
      7. To promote a positive transition for new faculty to the NMC community.
    2. Membership
      Director of the Center for Instructional Excellence (chair), plus six faculty members appointed by the Vice President for Educational Services. Director to be appointed for a three-year term with the possibility of a one-term (three-year) renewal. The six faculty members should reflect a cross-section of those served by the Center and shall serve staggered two-year terms with the possibility of a one-term (two-year) renewal.
    3. Responsibilities
      1. Discover and report to the CIE board examples of teaching excellence and faculty initiatives, such as those involving innovation, creativity, integration, and diversity.
      2. Serve as CIE liaison for assigned disciplines.
      3. Provide guidance on Center for Instructional Excellence operational matters.
      4. Coordinate faculty recognition programs and publicize faculty achievements.
      5. Advocate financial support of the Center for Instructional Excellence via the college governance structure.
      6. Attend activities and events sponsored by the Center for Instructional Excellence and seek to demonstrate leadership through attendance and promotion of other campus events.
      7. Prioritize and recommend distribution of any centralized discretionary faculty development funds.
      8. Coordinate faculty sessions at fall and spring semester preopening conferences and other professional development days.
      9. Review staffing levels of Center for Instructional Excellence and make recommendations for the following budget year to manage the CIE budget responsibly.
      10. Evaluate the effectiveness of the Coordinator and Board on an annual basis.
      11. Communicate with full-time and adjunct faculty regarding Center for Instructional Excellence activities.
      12. Facilitate and support the orientation of new and adjunct faculty.
      13. Each Board member should try to attend a national conference on teaching and learning within each two-year advisory board appointment.
    4. Meeting Frequency
      The Advisory Board shall meet twice monthly or as needed.
    5. Communications Strategy
      Communication of CIE activities will be published in the following ways:
      1. CIE NEWSletter (two in Fall Semester, two in Spring Semester)
      2. College publications (weekly INTERCOM, White Pine Press, college monitor and radio station)
      3. NMC home page (internet)
      4. Community publications (newspapers, radio, TV)
      5. Brochures
      6. Flyers
      7. E-mail
      8. Direct mail
    6. Constituencies
      Full-time and adjunct faculty
