CIE Mission & Responsibilities
- Mission Statement
The Center for Instructional Excellence
supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives,
promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement
of excellence.
- II. Advisory Board
- Purpose
- To promote and encourage excellence among faculty by fostering
faculty knowledge, awareness, and the application
of effective, innovative, and creative techniques for learning
and teaching.
- To advise the Vice President for Educational Services
on operational matters regarding the Center for Instructional
Excellence.
- To review the effectiveness of the Center for Instructional
Excellence in meeting its mission.
- To make recommendations for continuous improvement of
the Center for Instructional Excellence.
- To oversee the distribution of professional development
resources.
- To facilitate on-campus professional development activities.
- To promote a positive transition for new faculty to the
NMC community.
- Membership
Director of the Center for Instructional
Excellence (chair), plus six faculty members appointed by the Vice President
for Educational Services. Director to be appointed for a three-year term
with the possibility of a one-term (three-year) renewal. The six faculty
members should reflect a cross-section of those served by the Center
and shall serve staggered two-year terms with the possibility of a one-term
(two-year) renewal.
- Responsibilities
- Discover and report to the CIE board examples of teaching
excellence and faculty initiatives, such as those involving
innovation, creativity, integration, and diversity.
- Serve as CIE liaison for assigned disciplines.
- Provide guidance on Center for Instructional Excellence
operational matters.
- Coordinate faculty recognition programs and publicize
faculty achievements.
- Advocate financial support of the Center for Instructional
Excellence via the college governance structure.
- Attend activities and events sponsored by the Center for
Instructional Excellence and seek to demonstrate leadership
through attendance and promotion of other campus events.
- Prioritize and recommend distribution of any centralized
discretionary faculty development funds.
- Coordinate faculty sessions at fall and spring semester
preopening conferences and other professional development
days.
- Review staffing levels of Center for Instructional Excellence
and make recommendations for the following budget
year to manage the CIE budget responsibly.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the Coordinator and Board
on an annual basis.
- Communicate with full-time and adjunct faculty regarding
Center for Instructional Excellence activities.
- Facilitate and support the orientation of new and adjunct
faculty.
- Each Board member should try to attend a national conference
on teaching and learning within each two-year advisory
board appointment.
- Meeting Frequency
The Advisory Board shall meet twice
monthly or as needed.
- Communications Strategy
Communication of CIE activities will
be published in the following ways:
- CIE NEWSletter (two in Fall Semester, two in Spring Semester)
- College publications (weekly INTERCOM, White Pine Press,
college monitor and radio station)
- NMC home page (internet)
- Community publications (newspapers, radio, TV)
- Brochures
- Flyers
- E-mail
- Direct mail
- Constituencies
