Interdisciplinary/College-Wide
Faculty Development Funding

Operating Philosophy:

  1. Priority will be given to faculty professional development requests that are directly connected with initiatives related to teaching and learning excellence.
  2. Activities that will lead to interdisciplinary course offerings or improvement also are important. The CIE board wishes to underscore the educational benefits a student receives when connections are made between courses that were once viewed in isolation.
  3. In addition to funding the direct costs of professional development, CIE is also willing to financially support the replacement cost of an instructor (at current adjunct rates) when this is the only means that will allow the instructor to complete the requested professional development activity. CIE will fund up to one-week backfill.
  4. The CIE Board considers the development of new technological skills a priority. Examples of this would be new software programs that would be of use to more than one discipline (not upgrades) and techniques or equipment related to distance education or alternate delivery formats.
  5. CIE does not fund tuition for advanced college or university courses or related expenses. Recognizing the benefit to the institution of having more career-plan faculty with advanced degrees, financial support for these activities can be requested through the Sabbatical/Professional Development Leave Committee.
  6. CIE will fund credit courses that specifically enhance teaching and learning to the benefit of the discipline or the college (e.g., an instructor might take an on-line course in preparation for teaching one in the future). Each request will be reviewed by the CIE Advisory Board on an individual basis. CIE will not fund courses for retraining, certification, or advanced degrees.
  7. Understanding that the priorities of the College will change with the changing needs of students, the priorities and distribution of CIE funding will evolve as these changes occur.
