Academic Advising
First Year Students — Any student may take advantage of academic advising. However, first year students are required to have an advising appointment with a counselor or advisor before registering for the next semester's classes. At this time questions can be answered about programs of study, career, and transfer. An advisor "hold" is placed on first year students to ensure they receive this important advising. The counselor/advisor's signature on the completed enrollment form releases the "hold" so the student can register in person. Registration — The "hold" on first year students makes registration in person necessary. After the first year, students have more choices. They may still meet with the counselor or advisor of their choice, but are not required to do so unless they are on probation (below 2.0 GPA). They may register in person, or on-line. Students wanting to register on line, OR just check out what classes are open or closed may do so at www.nmc.edu/webregistration Flexible Learning Options — Flexible Learning Options (FLO) for class delivery are becoming more popular as students lives become busier and busier. However, a careful assessment is necessary in order to decide whether a telecourse, Internet telecourse, ITV, on-line, or OPEN course is for you. Also, many courses utilize combinations of these technological models. Counselors would be glad to discuss this with you, or you may view further information on these Flexible Learning Options and an On-Line Readiness Self Assessment. On-Line Courses — If you know on-line is for you, several links to on-line courses will be of interest to you:
E-mail Counselors — General information can be obtained on-line by e-mailing counselors directly at counseling@nmc.edu. One caution, during peak registration times the delay in response time may be significant! Such advice given on-line is not intended to substitute for a first year student's advisor appointment and signature requirement. Students doing their entire degree on-line can discuss how to meet this requirement with one of the counselors. GPA Calculator — Students may Calculate GPA for the semester or cumulutive themselves using an on-line aid. Students will enter their classes, credit hours, and grades and the form will do the calculation. Grades of individual classes may be varied to see how that changes GPA.
