Counseling Center Revised 3/6/08

Orientation

Who must attend Orientation?  All admitted first time students and transfer students with 25 or less transferable credits.

John McDonald at Orientation

What goes on at Orientation?

  • Information about Financial Aid, NMC, and college life.
  • Meet with counselor or advisor to schedule classes
  • Register for classes
  • From start to finish, the entire orientation session may last from 3-4 hours

What is Placement Testing? NMC has mandatory placement into Composition and Math classes based on test scores. ACT scores may be used for placement if both Reading and Writing are 19+ and if Math is 24+. Student is responsible for sending ACT scores to NMC. If ACT scores were lower, or not taken, then a computerized test called COMPASS is required. Older ASSET scores may be used for placement, except in Math, which requires the newer COMPASS test. Students who have college composition and math courses completed must have a transcript sent to NMC to use in class placement.
These tests and transcripts must be completed or received by NMC BEFORE attending Orientation.

Testing and Orientation Dates:

Admitted students also receive a newsletter in the mail outlining the testing and orientation process.
On-line sample test questions from ACT, TestPreview, and other COMPASS test information are available for advance review.
