NMC Carpentry ProgramSkilled carpenters must knowledgeably use specialized tools; read blueprints; fram structures; install doors, windows, cabinets, insulation, and finish trim; and construct roof, decks, and stairways. Being versatile opens a wide range of employment opportunities.

The Residential Carpentry Certificate Program consists of three levels (5 courses). Basic Construction Skills is the entry course for the Certificate Program.

A Commercial Construction Certificate can be obtained by completion of the carpentry program, plus level four.

The curriculum is designed by the industry and aligned with national competency standards.

 

NMC Carpentry Program

 

Basic Construction Skills
This course provides a basic introduction to construction work for all trade skills for the beginning professional and do-it-yourself work. This course is required for the Carpentry Certificate Program. Experienced students may take a competency test to "test out" of the course.

Residential Carpentry Level 1
Through structured classroom discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities, students learn skills in areas listed below:

  •  floor systems
  •  wall and ceiling framing
  •  roof framing
  •  windows, and exterior doors

NMC Carpentry Program

Carpentry Level 2 (summer only)
Through structured classroom discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities, students learn skills in areas listed below:

  •  reading plans and elevations
  •  site layout (distance measurement and leveling)
  •  introduction to concrete and reinforcing materials
  •  foundations and flatwork, concrete forms
  •  reinforcing concrete, handling and placing concrete
  •  patented forms, and tilt-up wall systems

Carpentry Level 3 - Part A & B (Building Sciences)
Through structured classroom discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities, students learn skills in areas listed below:

  •  stair construction & patented forms
  •  interior finish of ceilings and walls
  •  roofing applications and installation of cornices
  •  various wall structures
  •  thermal and moisture protection
  •  cabinetry

Commercial Construction Level IV - Part A & B
Through structured classroom discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities, students learn skills in areas listed below:

  •  crew leader supervision skills
  •  site layout - angular measurement
  •  advanced wall and floor systems
  •  metal buildings
  •  welding
  •  advanced stair systems
  •  introduction to light equipment
