Watercolor: Step-by-Step
Immerse yourself in watercolor! Explore all aspects of watercolor painting with well-known watercolor artist, Carolyn Scott Risk. Carolyn will demonstrate many techniques and paint applications and guide your painting in a step-by-step approach with the primary focus on flowers. Learn about materials as you gain skill in working with color, values, shape, and composition. Individual attention is given so that you will work at a comfortable, yet challenging level. A list of supplies will be mailed prior to the first class. Make a day of it by registering for the afternoon watercolor class with flowers and garden scenes and save $7.

Glass Blowing and You
Get fired up! Experience the physical properties of molten glass using the flame working technique. Discover how to form objects from rods and tubes of glass using very strong Borosilicate glass (Pyrex). Develop an ongoing awareness of the safety issues in working with glass. All materials and supplies are provided. Class size is limited to six.

Beginning Marble Making
Explore this unique art form as you learn basic borosilicate marble-shaping techniques. Once you are comfortable with shaping, discover how to add color and pattern. No experience is necessary. You’ll create a few good marbles available for pick up the following day but there will plenty of “trial and error” marbles to enjoy as you learn to refine your skill.

Intermediate Pendant
Take your skills up a notch as you learn to encase and work borosilicate glass into pendants. Emphasis will be on the basics of holding color in the glass and shaping it using various tools. You will be able to pick up your creations the following day.

Advanced Project
Create a one of a kind work of art using borosilicate glass. In this hands-on class, manipulate glass and add colors to personalize your own project using previously learned skills. Shape the molten glass using graphite tools and a torch. You will be able to take home your creation the next day after it has been annealed in a glass working kiln.

Cartoon FUNdamentals
Are you a teacher looking to add interest to your classroom, a parent, grandparent, or simply someone looking for a creative outlet? Explore this right-brain activity designed to give you the skills to engage yourself or a child in hours of fun. Dick Evans, a lifelong cartoonist, introduces a step-by-step approach to creating characters. You’ll learn to draw faces, expressions, and cartoon bodies in his no-risk approach. You’ll leave with the tools to start enjoying your new skills or sharing them with kids. Resource book included. No previous drawing experience needed. Bring a 9 x 12 inch sketch pad (not newsprint) and two pencils with erasers.

Woodturning Basics
Learn to turn! You’ll receive complete personal instruction on lathe-turned wood items, concentrating on faceplate turning of bowls. Clay Goddess Girls of Today—
A Pottery Experience

Looking for a new, creative experience for summer? NMC’s pottery studio nestled in the campus woods is just the place to sink your hands into an empowering experience. Guided by potter and tile artist, Rosalyn Tyge, you’ll create your own clay goddess. Prehistoric clay goddesses date back to 7000 B.C. Learn a little history while exploring clay, creating a figurine, and adding today’s earthy adornments. No previous pottery experience required. Dress for mess. Materials provided. Time between sessions allows for drying.

Family Pottery Nights
Bring a family member or two for a few evenings of clay work. After learning some simple handbuilding techniques (not wheelwork), family members will be able to create several different pottery pieces. Creations might include bowls, vases, tiles, cups, or something more unusual such as gargoyles, abstract sculptures, or totem pole rings. We will build with clay in the first two sessions and glaze our pieces the last session.

Rag Rug Braiding
Learn a lost-art technique which is different from the rug braiding most are familiar with. Rather than sewing the braids together, each row is interbraided into the last, resulting in a strong, functional, beautiful rug that will carry on for generations. Learn how to braid your own rugs from start to finish. A list of materials and instructions will be mailed prior to class (some sewing required in material prep).

Beading Basics—
Make Your Own Jewelry

Creating original, beautiful beaded jewelry is fun and easy. Learn the basic techniques through detailed instruction and hands-on practice. You’ll be introduced to everything from wire manipulation to bead stringing and all the lingo and tools to go with them. Put your new knowledge to use by creating a simple and elegant necklace and earring set. Bring a small towel and if you have them, bring a pair of round-nose pliers (and your reading glasses) for fine work.

Advanced Beading
Go beyond the basics and add something new to your beading skills! Create an elegant two-strand necklace that looks like it is floating around your neck. Discover the crimping technique and learn how to crimp strands onto a clasp and add beads in a similar fashion. Take home an elegant necklace along with the knowledge and confidence to try this technique on your own. Bring a towel, flat nose pliers, and reading glasses if you need them.

Jewelry Basics—Beading with Leather
Create a unique and decorative beaded leather pouch just perfect to carry your driver’s license. Learn hand-sewing techniques for leather and edge beading to make a colorful leather pouch beautiful enough to wear around your neck. Handcraft a leather thimble for future leather sewing projects. Please bring a hand towel and glasses if you need them. All other materials provided.

T-shirt Quilt
Not sure what to do with those old t-shirts? A small t-shirt quilt is a fun way to preserve memories and makes a wonderful gift for concert-goers, sports fans, babies, or graduates. This one-day workshop guides you through each step of the process from cutting and sewing to quilting and binding. Come prepared to give new life to 15-20 old t-shirts. Basic sewing skills are helpful. A supply list and pre-class instructions will be mailed prior to class. Bring a sewing machine. Class breaks one hour for lunch on your own.
