Beyond Singing in the Shower—
Voice Class for Anyone

Learn to be a better singer working with the voice you have. Whether you want to sing in a choir, a group, or go solo, you can improve your singing skills. You will learn by doing as you work with breathing, tone, diction, performance anxiety, and preparing for solo work. Enjoy working with a variety of music as you explore the potential of your voice. Sing on! The required text Sing Legato by Kenneth Jennings may be purchased at the NMC Bookstore (995-1285).

Learn to Sight Read Music
Learn basic skills for beginners or returning students who want to learn or improve sight reading vocal music. Learn key signatures, singing intervals, reading pitch and rhythm notation. Students should be able to match pitches vocally.

NMC Grand Traverse Chorale
Joint offering with the Humanities Area. Community members and college students make up this choral group which explores a wide variety of choral repertoire from across the musical eras. Beginning Piano
Learn the basics of piano playing including names of notes, music notation, hand position, and playing techniques. You’ll get started with rhythms, simple scales, and key and time signatures. After six weeks, you will play simple melodies with chord accompaniment using both hands. You’ll learn in a group setting, but progress at your own pace. Weekly short written assignments and at least two hours of practice per week outside of class will help you reach your goals. Designed for adults and youth age 15 and up. The required text Practical Piano Skills, by William and Constance Starr (approximately $50) may be purchased at the NMC Bookstore (995-1285).

Beginning Guitar
Learn the basics of guitar playing in this beginning class. You’ll learn several chords and progressions, different strumming styles, and get a fundamental introduction to lead guitar. Discover tuning techniques and how to care for a guitar while adding to your skills and knowledge at each session. Please bring an acoustic six-string guitar and pick to class. Music materials included. Designed for adults and youth age 15 and up.
