Enjoy a different kind of fall workout with a gym night designed for fun and fitness. Each 3-week segment focuses on the skills and drills for a specific sport—basketball, soccer, and volleyball. You will learn (or relearn) basic skills, spend time in practice (skills and drills), and end with a scrimmage game. The emphasis is on increasing aerobic fitness, coordination, and strength; not on competition. Register for the 9-week course or any 3-week session. Bring clean tennis shoes. Locker rooms available.

Grand Traverse Bay is now Michigan’s 12th Underwater Preserve. Become qualified to participate in new discoveries by taking this entry-level Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) class. Learn more about archaeology and discover the need for conservation and preservation of the underwater cultural heritage whether you are a diver or non-diver. Gain an understanding of the surveying and recording techniques used on land or in the water.

Discover Rock Climbing: Indoors
Climbing as a sport has gone from extreme to mainstream in the past few years with the development and use of indoor climbing facilities. Discover this great fitness and confidence-building activity while climbing in a comfortable indoor setting. This introductory course will familiarize you with climbing and safety equipment and techniques while providing time “on the wall” under the watchful eye of the instructor. You’ll learn climbing communication and commands, fundamental hand hold and foothold techniques, and how to assist other climbers with spotting and belay methods. Get fit and have fun building skills on an indoor rock climbing wall! All equipment is provided. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and athletic-style shoes.

Nordic Ski Walking
Ski Walking /Nordic Walking is kind of like cross-country skiing, but without the snow and skis. Join the thousands of Americans who are discovering this new fun low-impact workout. Ski Walking engages the arms and other muscle groups—burning more calories while at the same time assisting with balance. Using the correct length poles and proper technique helps to eliminate/minimize shin, knee, hip, and back pain sometimes associated with walking and/or running. Each week we will explore the many trails of the Grand Traverse Commons, refining techniques for maximum benefit. If you are looking for a fun fitness class, this is it. Includes free Nordic Walking DVD and the use of Nordic Walking Poles at home for duration of this course.

Horseback Riding—Level II
Welcome back riders! This continuation class begins with a review of basic western riding skills and etiquette. You will get your horse ready each day to practice grooming, bridling, and saddling. In addition, you will work on increased balance and control; learn the importance of a good seat, and how to transition between gaits. Increase your knowledge of how the horse’s mind and body works so that you can gain more confidence around these majestic animals. Each day includes riding in either an outside arena area or on the trails. Must be 18 or older.

The Art and Sport of Fencing
Fencing combines fast-paced action with quick thinking, strategy, and fitness. Experience the challenge and fun in this series of workshops for beginning to beginning/intermediate level fencers. Our lead coach provides students with instruction and experience from international-level competition.
Fencing I: Beginning
Gain solid foundational skills while building an understanding of the sport and its history and structure. Designed for the novice; students will learn basic foot work, skill-building drills, basic weapon use, rules and safety, along with techniques and strategies. Complete with demos and individual instruction, you will get at taste of competition by the end of the workshop. Fencing equipment is provided for beginners. Wear sweat pants and athletic shoes (flat-soled indoor soccer shoes work well).

Women’s Fall Color Kayak Tour - This class is filled.
Learn basic paddling techniques while taking in the gorgeous scenery of the winding Crystal River in Leelanau County. Meet new people with similar interests and learn about the wonderful sport of kayaking. You will paddle open-top kayaks and learn the basics of handling and maneuvering, along with safety issues. Participants should be in good physical condition and be comfortable in and around water. Dress for the weather, bring rain gear, gloves, hat, a change of clothing in a watertight bag, and a snack. Kayak, paddle, and personal flotation device provided. Minimum age 18; 14 if accompanied by an adult.

Close-to-Home Hikes—
Women and the Woods
Enjoy the delight and wonder of the fall woods by putting foot to trail in this introduction to three great nature hikes almost as close as your back door. Build confidence for hiking by learning the essentials for staying safe, comfortable, and “found”. Along the trail, your guide will introduce you to wild flowers and other woods wonders. By the end of the series, you will know your way around several local trails (with maps), have acquired basic “woods smarts,” and have met potential hiking buddies. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, and bring a water bottle. If one of the sessions is canceled due to inclement weather, the make-up class will be Oct. 19.

Recreational Tree Climbing
Climbing trees is not only for kicks, it’s a hot sport! Using arborist’s ropes and saddles, learn to ascend into the canopies safely—even how to camp there. Equipment is provided. Bring a sack lunch and drinking water. Dress for the weather with long pants and comfortable clothing and leave the part of you that’s “old enough to know better” at home!
