Books on the Boardman—
Modern African Voices

Explore post colonial African novels in an engaging once-a-month format. Begin with Things Fall Apart (1958), by novelist, poet, and critic, Nigerian Chinua Achebe. In October’s selection, What is the What (2006) Dave Eggers's hero, flees his village in Sudan to shelter in Ethiopia, then Kenya, and finally to Atlanta. Half a Yellow Sun (2006) by Chimamanda Ngazi Adichie is the November novel which re-creates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra's impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria. The final book, The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears (2007), is a debut novel by Dinaw Mengestu telling a story of the African immigrant experience through three characters now residing in Washington D.C.
