Global Issues
Increase your awareness of timely issues in a discussion format that explores eight issues of global concern. Themes and resource materials come from the Great Decisions briefing books published annually by the Foreign Policy Association. Topics for fall include the U.S. and Rising Powers, Afghanistan/Pakistan, Energy and the global economy, The Arctic, Egypt in the 21st Century, Global Food Supply, Cuba after Castro and Universal Human Rights. The briefing books, video clips from PBS, and guided group discussion provide thought-provoking content. Register for the complete 8-week series or either 4-week segment. Books are available in the EES office for $17. Please read the first topic before the first session.

Update Your Geography
Chances are your old geography class isn’t very useful for world news today. Take a look at the world and contemporary global geographic issues as they impact specific regions. Guided by Gary Howe, NMC geography instructor and intrepid traveler, get an updated global snapshot of trends in population, climate, energy, and cultural and development patterns. We will utilize new data visualizations to gain fresh perspectives on how we view the world.

You’ve just been appointed to the Supreme Court. What would be your ideological approach to interpreting the constitution? Deepen your understanding of this guiding document by exploring in-the-news issues brought to the high court. Guided by history professor and attorney, Allen Horstman, discover the historical background of specific issues, examine the arguments, and consider policy ramifications. Each week looks at current high court issues that will likely include topics like executive power, affirmative action, search and seizure, and federalism. If available, bring a copy of the constitution.
