No Child Left Inside—A Forum to Bring Kids
Back to Nature
What is nature deficit disorder and why is it important to get our kids back outdoors? Dr. Lisa Franseen, local eco-psychologist, draws from the work of Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, as she explores the consequences of over-scheduled, “plugged in” kids and the benefits of play and interaction with nature. Guest speaker, Becka Neilsen, National Wildlife Federation, provides an update on nationwide initiatives. Panelists from local centers including Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and the Grand Traverse Conservation District provide insights and opportunities for connecting with nature. Designed for educators, health-care professionals, after-school and daycare providers, conservation groups, local officials, and parents. 3 contact hours of continuing education (.3 CEUs) available. Approval for educator State Board CEUs is in process.

Problem Drinking—Addiction or Choice?
This half-day seminar connects self-defeating behavior theory with problem drinking assessment and treatment to clearly differentiate between addiction (bio-chemical conditions people have) and self-defeating behavior (choices people make). Areas of focus include practical assessment tools to reveal developing and cumulative damage, five common stages of denial, effective intervention strategies to dismantle denial, and useful exercises to promote life-generating alternatives to substance abuse. Designed for lay people as well as professionals in the areas of mental health, addictions counseling, family therapy, school counseling, nursing, social work, courts and corrections, youth services, clergy, teachers, and related professions.
