The Truth: What to Expect at NMC
Online classes are easier; they don't take as much time to complete . . . A Myth The same material, with the same course goals and outcomes, are covered in the NMC online and on-campus sessions of the same course. For most students it takes as much time, and sometimes more, to complete the activities, assignments, and tests.
I can begin my online course at any time; it's not necessary to begin at the semester or session start date. . . . A Myth NMC Internet/Online courses, unless ALSO designated as Self-paced/Extended Registration, begin at the start of the semester. Most instructors allow students entry into their online sections 5 days prior to the official start date of the session. Weekly activity is EXPECTED or students will fall behind.
All online classes are self-paced; I don't have to do assignments and activities every week, but can pick and choose when I can best complete them within the semester. . . . A Myth Some NMC online classes are also designated as Self-paced. BUT, there are only a few! Check the course description and details if unsure. Most online classes require weekly activity, and some instructors do not even allow their students to work ahead of the rest of the class.
If I surf the Web regularly, I have the necessary technology skills to take an online class. . . . A Myth You may or may not have enough skills. It depends upon how much experience you have saving and retrieving files, sending attachments, and finding your way around new applications and websites. Complete the Computer Skills Checklist in the next section of the Orientation and the Technology Needs information section to help determine if you indeed have the skills and technology necessary to succeed.
I can't find time to take a regular class, so I will take an online class. . . . A Myth You need as much time, sometimes more, to successfully complete an online class. Take the Time Management Survey in the next section of the orientation to help determine your available time.
I won't have to travel to campus at all; everything is done online. . . . A Myth Many NMC online classes require some on-campus meetings, lab work, or proctored testing. Proctored testing may be arranged at another location with instructor approval.
I can do everything on my own; I don't have to be online simulaneously with others to communicate and perform class activities. . . . A Myth Some NMC online classes may require online group work and/or chat sessions. Check the FLO Course Catalog. Details about the courses are provided, along with the capability of contacting the instructor (if assigned) for further information. Instructors also provide flexible options for students to avoid conflicts and other issues.
