Online Learning Orientation: Are YOU "Ready" for Online Classes?
Step 3: What Are the Technology Requirements?
Online learning requires that you have access to certain technologies and capabilities. Review these and determine whether or not you can meet these basic requirements.
Basic Technology Requirements
- Computer that has at least 256Mb of RAM is preferable. Additional hardware such as a CD-ROM and/or sound card (with speakers or headphones) may be required for some courses.
- Computer Monitor with a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels and a color depth of Hi Color (16 bit/64K) or greater.
- Reliable, stable access to the Internet. Broadband (Cable or DSL) is not required. If you have problems with your Internet access there are many computer labs available at NMC. Most public libraries also have computers with Internet access available.
- Recent Web browser
- Recommended: Internet Explorer® 5.5 or above or Firefox / Mozilla®1 or above
- Not recommended: AOL Web Browser-- Use AOL for access, but download either Internet Explorer or Firefox for class use.
- There are some known issues with downloading files and taking quizzes from NMC eLearning (Moodle) using Internet Explorer. Check out the "Change Your Settings Tutorial" to make sure you have your browser set up correctly.
- PDF Viewer
Many classes have documents saved in PDF. If you cannot view this type of document format, download the free PDF Viewer from Adobe.com.
- Audio and Video Players
More and more classes are using audio and video to enhance their course, and to deliver content online. To view online certain media players need to be used, depending upon the media type. Most open up with Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. QuickTime is another player that may be required. If you are having problems, identify the media type you need to view and what media player you have installed (perform the Technical Analysis to get this information). Contact the Help Desk and provide them this information to help figure out your issue.
- Word processor (e.g. Word, Works, WordPerfect, or OpenOffice - free office applicaiton suite)
- Class Specific requirements (see class details, the syllabus, and/or contact the instructor) in the FLO Course Catalog.
- Use the Technical Analysis to see if your computer is adequate to participate in an online course.
