Online Learning Orientation: Are YOU "Ready" for Online Classes?
Step 4: What is NMC eLearning (Moodle)?
man at computerNMC eLearning is the online course management system used for all NMC online courses. It is also used by many on-campus instructors to provide class materials, resources, and activities online. eLearning is using an application called Moodle. Therefore, you may hear the term Moodle or eLearning used--both are the same thing. eLearning runs on a web server, accessed at the following Web Address, or URL.

The eLearning website is http://elearning.nmc.edu.

You can also access NMC eLearning from the NMC home page (www.nmc.edu). It is located under the Quick Links from the Current Students Menu.

How Do I Find My Online Course(s)?
login screen capture
  • Open up your Web Browser and go to http://elearning.nmc.edu

  • Find the Login Area. It is located near the upper right corner of the web page, as shown in this image.

  • Type your NMC ID in the Username box. Your NMC ID is indicated on your registration receipt; it’s the part of your NMC e-mail address before the @ symbol.
  • Type in your Password. This is the same as your NMC ID password.

Not sure what your NMC ID or password is? Contact the Help Desk.

My Courses screen shot

After you log into NMC eLearning, you will see a new "My Courses" menu on the left hand side of the screen, directly below the Main Menu.

These course listings are links to the online course areas that you are enrolled (or teaching). Select the course name to enter your "online classroom area." Your courses will not display here unless the instructor has "activated" the course for online student access. Most instructors do not activate their online courses until the session start date or 5 days prior to that time.

What Does an NMC Online Course Look Like?

When you gain access to your course, it will look similar to the one below. A typical course will consist of the following areas:

  1. News & Announcements
This is where you will get communications primarily from your instructor. These may include:
    • A "Welcome to the Class" Announcement
    • How to get started information
    • Class updates
    • Other class news

  2. Course Menu
This menu provides easy navigation to different areas within a course.
    • The Control Panel allows you to e-mail your instructor or others in your course, change your profile and more.
    • The Gradebook is a quick link to see your grades on tests, activities and assignments.
    • The Calendar (located at the bottom of the menu) highlights when assignments and the such are due.
    • The other items listed in the menu are links are to the Course Content Topic Areas. They each contain materials, resources, and activities that relate to the module or topic identified.

  3. Course Information
This area focuses on overall course information and resources such as:
    • Instructor Contact Information
    • Syllabus
    • Class Schedule

  4. Course Content Topic Areas
The topics covered and the content in each area vary from class to class. Many classes begin with an Orientation Area to get you familiar with the navigation and structure of the course. Content may be text, a document to download, a link to another website, a quiz, a discussion forum or something entirely different. To learn more about these options, tour an actual course area; log into the Moodle 101: eLearning Basics (see below for more details).

How Do I Learn More About Using NMC eLearning?

Take a tour of NMC eLearning by enrolling in a short course, Moodle 101. In this course you can explore first hand examples of the variety of features that can be used by instructors. There are video tutorials that show how to use different features and tools. You can select only the features and tools you need at any one time, returning as many times as you like.
