Kingsley Club Golf Outing

Each June, more than 60 golfers gather at the Kingsley Club to benefit the Commitment Scholarship Program at NMC. Hosted by donor and Club chairman Edward C. Walker, this event provides the annual funding required ensuring that academically promising students with financial need can attend college. Further, this event offers one of the few opportunities for non-members to golf at the famed and challenging Kingsley Club.

Since it began in 1993, the NMC Commitment Scholarship Program has welcomed over 600 first-generation college students from 18 participating school districts in northwest Michigan. Students are selected by school counselors and principals while in the 8th grade. They are "coached" through high school and invited to participate in cultural enrichment opportunities. Just five years later, these scholars may continue their education at NMC with a financial support for tuition and fees.

On October 9, 2006, 40 ninth grade students from the northwest Michigan region will be inducted into NMC's Commitment Program. Those successfully completing the Program will be invited to attend NMC in 20010 - with scholarship support.

"You don't just give us the scholarship in 8th grade and say good luck! You're with us every step of the way. You don't just help us set goals; you help us reach goals by keeping us focused on college. And here I am at NMC!"
Jessie Mick, Elk Rapids High School

"The Commitment Program reaches out to students during their formative years and provides a vehicle to carry them forward into productive and rewarding lives. I am convinced that the intervention in the Commitment Program on behalf of these young students will make a significant and permanent difference for them and out community."
Ed Walker, Benefactor
