"Thank you for selecting me to receive an NMC scholarship! As a non-traditional student, the scholarship helped a great deal with tuition. And, this financial assistance enabled me to devote more time to studies and participate in community service projects that developed my leadership skills through Student Government and Phi Theta Kappa. With this great start at NMC, I look forward to continuing my studies at Northern Michigan University." —Tara Fleis, NMC Class of 2005
Through the generous gifts of community donors, more than 700 NMC students were assisted in meeting their educational goals through Foundation scholarships last year. This support does make a difference - to Tara and others - by providing those important resources they need to pursue a college education and to improve their lives.
Contributions for NMC Scholarships
There are several options available for individuals, organizations and businesses to provide scholarship funds for deserving students at NMC. The Northwestern Michigan College Foundation coordinates scholarship donations for NMC students. For further information, contact the NMC Foundation at 231-995-1021 or 877-922-1021 or foundation@nmc.edu
- General Scholarships — General Scholarships are created when resources are combined from many donors. Contributions in any amount may be given at any time. Donors may designate a particular NMC program, departmental scholarship, or Adopt-A-Student county fund.
- Annual Named Scholarships — Annual Named Scholarships are a five-year commitment to provide yearly donations to fund scholarships. By making an initial pledge of $5,000 ($1,000 contributed annually for 5 years), donors have the opportunity to designate the name of their scholarship. Donors are also invited to work with the College to define the criteria for awarding this scholarship.
- Endowed Scholarships — Endowed Scholarships provide a permanent fund that is invested to generate annual earnings, which are used to provide awards to students. The principal is never spent, and thus these scholarships provide financial assistance for students in perpetuity. Endowed scholarships are often established to honor or memorialize an individual. Donors may also establish them through their wills or other planned giving methods. The minimum amount required to establish an endowed scholarship is $15,000. Additional contributions may be made at any time. Donors are invited to work with the College to define the award criteria for this scholarship.
- Memorials — Memorial Scholarships are established to honor the life of a loved one who has passed away. Family and friends are often invited to make contributions. The originating donor is invited to work with the College to plan the distribution of these memorial funds, generally as a one-time scholarship award to NMC students.
