Destinations

Located in the University Center of Northwestern Michigan College along the west shore of Boardman Lake, the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute offers a full complement of services to support learning about freshwater. The Hagerty Center at the Great Lakes Campus to our north is a state-of-the-art conference facility on the West Traverse Bay waterfront— with meeting rooms for 500 and professional planning and catering.

The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute has demonstration and research laboratories with direct access to Grand Traverse Bay. Also located at the Great Lakes Campus are the Great Lakes Maritime Academy with its training ship, "State of Michigan," and the Great Lakes Culinary Institute with its restaurant overlooking the bay. On NMC's main campus, the new Health and Science Building is a handsome learning environment with graduate-level laboratories, and on Boardman Lake, the NMC University Center offers programs in cooperation with 11 Michigan Universities.

The Great Lakes Campus is ten minutes by foot from downtown Traverse City, Michigan—a destination resort community for recreation, tourism, and hospitality. The region includes Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, The Manitou Islands, tours of 16 wineries, the Dennos Museum Center, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and some of the world's finest lakes, rivers, hiking trails, and golf courses.

The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute partners with the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau www.mytraversecity.com to provide the best possible experience for every visitor. Traverse City is served by major airlines at Cherry Capital Airport, and is 260 miles from Detroit and 350 miles from Chicago.
