Health Occupations Revised 4/16/08

Health Occupations Nursing Programs

Thank you for inquiring about NMC. We are a community college in Traverse City with Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Practical Nursing (PN), and LPN to ADN Completion Programs. We believe we have excellent programs (I may be slightly biased!).

In our ADN program students have the option of taking classes on campus and online. The clinical classes are completed in the Traverse City area. We are not able to offer clinical sites outside the Traverse City area at this time. Students are finding the online classes challenging but rewarding.

You may ask what makes NMC different? Well, here is a partial list:

  • Once admitted to nursing, all students are assigned a nursing academic advisor. This advisor works with the student during the entire nursing program. This gives them an opportunity to build a relationship and have the consistent guidance needed to be successful.
  • Our nursing management class enables students to spend three full days each week for eight weeks in the clinical setting. We believe this helps students better prepare for the work setting.
  • All our clinicals with the exception of fundamentals and specialty clinical rotations are full clinical days. There is a pre-conference followed by the two full clinical days. We believe the clinical experience is a necessity.

Another benefit for our students is the University Center here in Traverse City. We work together very closely with three schools of nursing and have developed articulation agreements to assist students with earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Once students graduate from NMC and meet the university's entrance requirements, they can transfer to one of the following University Center schools:

  • Ferris State University,
  • Grand Valley State University, or
  • University of Michigan.

Nursing faculty at NMC are extremely competent. There are:

  • 8 full time faculty members
  • 4 nurse practitioners
  • 7 NISOD Teaching Excellence Award winners and
  • 4 faculty who have presented at local and or national conferences.

NMC also has tremendous community support. We passed bond proposals to build:

  • The Integrated Science and Technology Center which houses our new nursing and science labs,
  • The M-TEC Center which houses the automotive, technical, and aviation programs, and
  • The Great Lakes Campus which houses the Maritime and Culinary Programs.
