Eligibility for Consideration to the
NMC Nursing Program

  1. Apply for admission to Northwestern Michigan College. For details see the schedule of classes or catalog.
    • Complete a college application. Indicate either Associate Degree Nursing (302) or Practical Nursing (010) on your application if you have all of your pre-requisites completed. Mark either pre-ADN (950) or pre-PN (951) if you plan to take pre-requisites needed for the nursing programs. For details on pre-requisites request a program information form from the Health Occupations office or visit www.nmc.edu/healthoccupations/nursing
    • Contact and request that your high school and college transcripts be sent to the Admissions Office at 1701 E. Front Street, Traverse City, MI 49686
    • Take COMPASS placement test, if you have no prior college English or math (or math that is beyond 5 years). COMPASS is given on a walk-in basis Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Career and Student Employment Office, for more information call 995-1041.
      • If you are not eligible for admission to the PN or ADN nursing programs, you will be placed in the pre-PN or pre-ADN program and a letter will be sent stating what you need to achieve (i.e. GPA, course, etc.) to be eligible.
  2. Complete pre-requisite courses as listed in your letter.
    • Work with a counselor in the Counseling Center to complete an Educational Development Plan to be certain that you take all of your pre-requisite classes. Make an appointment with an academic Counselor call 995-1040 or visit the Counseling Center in LB 104.
    • Plan ahead for courses, as some courses must be taken sequentially.
  3. Apply for admission to the NMC Nursing Program during your last semester of pre-requisite courses:
    • Complete and submit a nursing notification form for each option you are interested in applying to for the Northwestern Michigan College nursing program. The options available are full-time and part-time for both the ADN and PN programs. The ADN program also has an online option available for fall admission only. The Practical Nursing notification form is green and the Associate Degree Nursing notification form is yellow. The forms are available in Admissions, Counseling, and Health Occupations. Submit these forms to the Admissions Office located on the main floor of the Tanis Building.
      • You will receive a letter, regarding eligibility if space is available. Consideration will be to the option(s) you have selected (i.e. if you opted for full-time traditional , you will be admitted to full-time traditional only). If space is not available in the option(s) you selected, you will receive a letter informing you that you will be placed on a waiting list.
      • Consideration to the nursing programs takes place only after ALL pre-requisite courses are completed and is done on a first-come, first-serve, space available basis. Should qualified applicants exceed space available, competitive admission criteria may apply.
  4. You will receive a letter from the nursing office, upon admission to the program, assigning you to a faculty advisor who will meet with you to schedule your classes for the nursing program.
