General Nursing Frequently Asked
Questions
( Each link below opens in new browser window )
- I am interested in nursing but am not sure which program
to apply to. How do I decide?
- NMC has an Associate Degree Program and Practical Nursing Program.
The Practical Nursing Program is a certificate program. Once
the prerequisites are completed, you can complete the program
in four semesters on a full time basis. We admit students to
this program once a year. The program begins in January. When
you complete the program, you are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN
(or state boards) to become licensed as a licensed practical
nurse or LPN.
- The Associate Degree Program is a degree program. The prerequisites
will take a minimum of two (2) semesters to complete. There are
four semesters of nursing classes. We admit students twice a
year - in the fall and spring semesters. When you complete the
program, you are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN (or state boards)
to become a registered nurse or RN.
- I am interested in the nursing program. Where do I start?
- Your first step would be to complete an application for admission
for the appropriate nursing program and forward all high school and
college official transcripts to the Admissions Office (http://www.nmc.edu/admissions/).
The Admissions Office will review your transcripts and let you know
what is needed to meet the prerequisites for admission. You may also
want to set up an appointment with a counselor in the Counseling
Center. They are a good resource to help develop a plan to complete
your intended program ( www.nmc.edu/counseling/contacts.html ).
- I am a transfer student. I believe I have completed all
the prerequisites. What do I do next?
- What is the difference between prerequisites and corequisites?
- Prerequisites are the classes that must be completed before
you can be considered for admission to the nursing program. There
is a specific sequence for some of the classes. If you must take
a math class, this must be completed before you can take Chemistry.
If you have not taken chemistry in high school, you must take
college chemistry before you can take the first Anatomy & Physiology
class. As you can see, this could be a little confusing. This
is where meeting with a counselor in the Counseling Center would
be very helpful ( www.nmc.edu/counseling/contacts.html ).
- Corequisites are classes that can be taken along with other
classes. Examples of this would be nursing clinicals are corequisites
with nursing theory classes. You must take the theory class with
or before the clinical class.
- When should I apply for the nursing program?
- You should apply for the nursing program the semester before you
complete your prerequisites through the Admissions Office. You will
not receive a letter of acceptance until all prerequisite classes
are completed and grades are posted. Applying a semester early helps
us track how many students are seeking admission. It also places
you on a list to determine placement if spaces are limited.
- Can I take Anatomy & Physiology with my nursing classes?
- Our guidelines state that you may take Anatomy & Physiology
II with the first year nursing classes. It is a very heavy load.
We do not recommend this class load unless you have achieved at least
a "B" in Anatomy & Physiology I. Students who choose
to take nursing and Anatomy & Physiology II usually do this on
a part time basis.
- I am working full time and want to become a nurse. Do you
offer weekend and evening classes?
- At this time we do not offer weekend or evening theory classes.
Some of the prerequisites are offered online. There is also the option
to take the nursing theory classes online. Clinical sections begin
as late at 2:30 PM and may be 2-3 evenings per week depending on
the class.
- I am a single parent and want to complete my education. Is
financial aid available?
