PN Admission Requirements

  1. Application Deadline

    Admission is on a "rolling basis" which means that admission is considered at any time pending completion of all requirements as listed and space availability.

    • Application, COMPASS test scores, and all supporting documentation must be on file before eligibility can be determined. This includes submission of both official high school and college transcripts.
    • Current NMC students must submit the "PN Notification Form" to the Admission's Office indicating which semester they are applying to enter the PN program and whether this is on a full-time or extended basis. Notification Forms are available in 3 different campus offices: Admission's Office, Counseling Center, and the Health Occupations academic office.

  2. GPA Requirements

    High School GPA = 2.5 for...College GPA = to 2.0

    • GPAs are re computed to include academic classes only. Courses such as choir, PE, typing, or pottery are not considered in the GPA computation.
  3. Must complete either the COMPASS, or ACT Tests requirements.
    1. COMPASS Test score requirements.
      • Reading 82 or above...If lower, students must take ENG 99 - Intro to College Reading/Writing or ENG 108 - Reading & Learning Strategies.
        • Students who have completed a college degree do not need to take the reading part of the Compass test.
      • Writing 70 or above...If lower, must take ENG 99 - Intro. Col. Reading/Writing or ENG 111 - English Composition and ENG 11 - English/Writing Methods.
        • Students who transfer ENG 111 do not need to take the writing part of the Compass test.
      • Math 66 or above in Algebra......Students must place into MTH 121 -College Algebra. If not, students must take MTH 111 - Intermediate Algebra.

        Students who have completed Math 23 or equivalent or who have tested into Math 111 are eligible for admission consideration but must successfully complete Math 111 before enrolling in nursing (HNR) courses.

        Students who transfer a MTH 111 - Intermediate Algebra course that was taken within the last 5 years DO NOT need to take the math part of the COMPASS test. Students who transfer MTH111 that was taken more than 5 years ago may take the COMPASS test and demonstrate current math skills by placing into MTH 111 or successfully complete a math competency exam.

    2. ACT of 19 for reading and writing, ACT of 24 for math

  4. Courses required for admission consideration.
    1. **CHM 101 - Intro to Chemistry with a minimum grade of 2.0.

      Students with 2 semesters of high school chemistry with a 2.5 or better or with college Chemistry that is older than 5 years may meet the CHM 101 requirement by passing the Chemistry Department competency exam.

    2. **BIO 227 Anatomy and Physiology I 2.5 required.

      Must be taken within the last 5 years. If A&P is older than 5 yrs., students may retake BIO 227 & BIO 228 or successfully complete a competency exam.

      Transfer students must have competed course work equivalent to BIO 227, BIO 228 and BIO 208 (Microbiology) with 2.5 or better within the last 5 years before transfer credit will be considered.

  5. Courses recommended to be completed prior to starting the PN program.
    1. **BIO 228 - Anatomy and Physiology II - 2.5 required
      Should course scheduling permit, BIO 228 could be taken concurrently with HNR 100 and 106. See a counselor or advisor for details.
  6. CPR (Professional Red Cross or AHA Health Care Provider) — Recommended to be completed prior to admission or taken as a co-requisite with HNR 102 within the first five weeks of HNR 102. (Available at NMC-HPD 110)

Notes:

  • A physical examination and completion of the Health Occupations Certificate of Health documenting good mental and physical health is required prior to clinical course work.  In addition, the student must have the ability to perform the physical tasks generally required for the practice of nursing.
  • Criminal Background Checks are now required on all students entering the Associate Degree in Nursing and the Practical Nursing programs at Northwestern Michigan College. This is due to the change in legislation that requires Criminal Background Checks be completed for certain health care institutions. The background check will be required by Northwestern Michigan College upon admission to the program and prior to the beginning of the first course. The costs associated with this background check will be the sole responsibility of the nursing student.     Once admitted to the program, students subsequently convicted of any the crimes listed will be dismissed from the Nursing Program. It is the student's responsibility to report changes in the status of their criminal background to the Director of the Nursing Programs

  • The Board of Nursing may deny a license for a previous felony conviction, previous treatment for drug or alcohol abuse or after finding the existence of one or more grounds for board action listed in 333.16221 of the Public Health Code, Act 368 of 1978.
