NURSING INSTRUCTOR-MEDICAL/SURGICAL

Job Title: Nursing Instructor - Medical/Surgical
Department: Health Occupation Academic Area
Reports to: Director of Nursing Programs
FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

This position in the Nursing Department will provide instruction in nursing program courses that require clinical knowledge and expertise in Medical Surgical Nursing, and may require an emphasis in critical care.  This person is responsible for working in conjunction with the Health Occupations Academic Area toward the development and instruction of Nursing and related Allied Health courses.  This individual will prepare and deliver classes for students which effectively promote achievement of  student learning related to course objectives; teach as assigned in clinical area; serve as team leader in planning, coordination, and supervision of  clinical co-requisite course sections;  conduct assessment activities for purpose of evaluating student outcomes and course effectiveness; participate in curriculum and course development; advise students on curriculum, academic programs, employment and career goals; support and contribute to the growth and development of the academic area.  This position may also include teaching during weekend and evening hours; may include teaching online courses.  The successful candidate will possess a love of teaching and enjoy working with students, recruit, educate, and be a gentle communicator with good listening skills and have the ability to constructively evaluate and convey performance results.  This person must be able to function independently as a decision maker within the structure of the academic area and program, and have a desire to participate in departmental and college initiatives.  The individual will be flexible and a team player, able to teach both basic and higher level courses.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities Include the Following:
(other duties may be assigned)

Provide classroom and clinical instruction to students and develop theory and clinical nursing classes, including online and/or Flexible Learning Option courses

  • Teaches course work in classroom, online or other Flexible Learning Option.
  • Provides clinical instruction, supervision and evaluation for students assigned for lab, clinical experiences.
  • Participates in curriculum and course development, revision, and evaluation.
  • Employs a range of suitable strategies to foster student learning and assessment of the same.
  • Annual course assignment will generally include designation as Lead Instructor for specific courses (see below).
  • Prepares and delivers classroom instruction to students.
  • Stimulates class discussions and other active learning activities.
  • Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities as needed.
  • Demonstrates an interest in using current and emerging technologies in the classroom.
  • Schedules posted office hours as required by NMC policy in order to facilitate student access.
  • Participates in nursing and academic area meetings and other scheduled area activities.
  • Meets requirements for faculty evaluation, and academic advising.
  • Serves on specific academic area and College wide committees.

Serve as Lead Instructor by planning, coordinating, and supervising clinical corequisite course sections of assigned theory courses

  • Arrange and scheduling student clinical placements.
  • Write, update, and distribute course syllabus, course calendar, and clinical schedules.
  • Orient clinical instructors to course expectations, evaluation methods, etc.
  • Guide and supervise clinical instructors’ evaluations of students.
  • Provide feedback on clinical faculty performance; summarizing findings and directing any concerns to the Director of Nursing according to NMC policy.
  • Record and submit course grades.  Notifying the Director of Nursing of any students who fail, drop, or withdraw from the course.
  • Evaluate course outcomes and content and recommend changes to the Director of Nursing.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with clinical site managers and staff in order to promote and maintain an atmosphere conducive to educative harmony, continued goodwill and effective communication.
  • Resolve conflicts that may arise between individuals (staff, students, etc.).
  • Investigate the events surrounding incidents that require documentation and/or reports, etc.
  • Review and/or formulate documentation relevant to student probation and remediation in conjunction with clinical instructors.
  • Familiarize adjunct faculty with NMC policy and procedures in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
  • Ensure continuity between lecture content and student clinical assignments.
  • Teach any required seminars and lab components in conjunction with clinical instructors, etc.

Curriculum

  • Advises students on curriculum, academic programs, employment, and career goals, and other matters as appropriate.
  • Contributes to the growth and development of the academic area and the college by participating in team-based committee work, academic area planning, and other academic area-related and college-related activities.
  • Supports the academic area and college through other work normally expected of faculty members.

Teaching Effectiveness

  • Places the primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery, and evaluation/assessment of courses.
  • Understands the various levels of preparation represented in the typical classroom and communicates well to the various levels.
  • Provides a course syllabus to the students as outlined in the faculty handbook.
  • Understands and adapts teaching to various learning styles present in the classroom as demonstrated in the presentation of course materials and assessment of student learning.
  • Conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques.
  • Designs and implements course curriculum that reflects the relevance and conveys the value of academic studies to everyday world.
  • Understands and successfully uses learning technology, as needed, both in class and as a tool for distance learning.
  • Strives to foster higher-level learning with an emphasis on analysis, problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Promotes student demonstration of learning through a variety of assessments that may include exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings.
  • Has high expectations of students and gives challenging work.
  • Makes contact with students, recognizing them as individual learners including remembering their names and treating them as adults.
  • Is accessible to students both in and out of formal office hours and strives to help students be successful.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, or REGISTRATIONS

Required

  • Master's degree (M.S.) with a major in Nursing, and with specialization related to Medical Surgical Nursing and/or nursing education.
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain license before final hire date
  • Minimum - three years’ clinical experience and professional specialization related to Medical Surgical nursing.
  • Teaching experience with clients, nurses, other health care professionals, and/or students.
  • BCLS Certification.

Strongly Preferred

  • Critical Care Experience

  Preferred

  • Successful teaching experience in a school/college of nursing and knowledge of adult learning theory.
  • Experience in the instruction of web-based, online, and other nontraditional courses.
  • Experience/knowledge of the use of computers in course preparation and development.
  • American Heart Association BLS Instructor. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise adjunct faculty.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing concerns and resolving problems.

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
