Summary
Grants from foundation, corporate and government sources provide revenue for college programs, facilities and special projects that result in tangible benefits to the learners and communities we serve. The purpose of this position is to develop, increase and manage grant resources across targeted programs and operating units of Northwestern Michigan College. In doing so, the Grants Officer will:
- Develop and nurture dynamic, trusting relationships with grant makers, faculty/staff, volunteers and community/regional partners.
- Communicate the NMC vision, mission and strategic initiatives to grant makers and interpret grant maker program priorities for NMC faculty/staff and partners.
- Identify grant resources and develop proposals as well as serve as a resource for/editor of proposals, matching college needs with grant maker programs and interests
- Demonstrate responsible stewardship.
In collaboration with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement/Executive Director of the NMC Foundation, the individual in this position will develop and implement strategies for a comprehensive grant seeking program in order to increase revenue to NMC from corporations, foundations and government entities. This individual will need knowledge of the complete grant proposal development process including multi-year program and budget preparation, grant management and reporting. Excellent written (technical writing) and verbal communications skills are a must. Experience with seeking and winning some or all of the following: major federal, state and other public grants and corporate and foundation grants, as well as a demonstrated ability in matching appropriate sources with institutional needs, are key aspects of this position. The successful candidate will be proficient in electronic submission of grant proposals (e.g. NSF FastLane System) and demonstrate agility with Microsoft Office Suite and Internet searches and research, including interpretation and presentation of economic and/or demographic data. Excellent time and project management skills and demonstrated success with managing multiple projects and proposals simultaneously are needed, along with the ability to organize and coordinate the work of proposal development teams which may include internal and external members. This individual must be goal-oriented, self-motivated, reliable, detail-oriented and articulate. Personal integrity, sound judgment and a sense of humor are characteristics that will engender success in this position.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities Include the Following:

Manage a comprehensive grant seeking program. In collaboration with the Vice President, plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive grant seeking effort focused on college priorities.
- Be directly responsible for college-wide grant seeking from concept and pre-proposal storyboarding to writing, developing/cultivating relationships with program officers and negotiating grants.
- Work independently or as a team member or leader, as the situation requires.
- Provide leadership for committees and task force efforts focused on grant seeking projects/initiatives.
- Initiate weekly communication with the President, Executive staff, faculty and staff to stay apprised of college initiatives for which grants can be an element of the funding equation.
- Position the college and foundation as a preferred target for grant dollars.
- Provide a positive return on investment in grant staff resources expended.
Manage related grant seeking and grant management activities.
- Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate grant oversight and reporting procedures.
- Establish grant indirect cost rates.
- Identify and train faculty/staff to participate in grant seeking.
- Develop and nurture positive relationships with grant seekers and grant makers.
- Recommend and implement appropriate recognition policies and procedures in appreciation of grant seekers and grant makers.
Education and/or Experience
REQUIRED
- Education –Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum three years successful, paid, full-time grant seeking experience
- Demonstrated success with seeking and winning some or all of the following: federal, state, corporate and foundation grants
- Proficiency with electronic submission of grant proposals (e.g. NSF FastLane)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs

STRONGLY DESIRED
- Experience with successful implementation of grant oversight and reporting processes
- Successful experience with organizing and coordinating proposal development teams
- Experience with developing and leading grant writing training programs
- Demonstrated excellent time and project management skills

Valid unrestricted Michigan Drivers License.
Supervisory Responsibilities
