NMC Humanities Revised 7/12/06

Music Program

Some students select a course of study that requires a four-year degree of which two years may be completed at Northwestern Michigan College through completion of the Associate in Science and Arts degree (ASA).

The study of Music offers a vast variety of career options including performance, education, sales, publication, therapy, composition, arranging, marketing/advertising, and audio/studio technology. Professional opportunities for a skilled musician are endless in that music, in some way, touches every part of our lives.

The curricula for all the professions listed above have, at their core, two years of study in Music Theory, Aural Harmony, Ensemble, Piano Instruction, Private Instruction (Applied) and in year two, Music History and Literature. Auditions for placement in Private Instruction are by appointment in Spring and Summer, contact the Academic Area Office Manager or Music Department Chair to arrange.

Music students at NMC are provided a minimum of three opportunities each semester to demonstrate performance skills learned through applied instruction. These performances are held in the Milliken Auditorium located on the NMC campus.

Many students who enter NMC bring performance skills from participation in high school bands, orchestras and choirs. All ensembles can be taken for academic credit and readily transfer as Humanities electives. Please call the Music Department for details on participation in the NMC Music Department Ensembles.

Many music majors transfer to conservatories and private schools of music. Specifically designed programs of study leading to transfer, but not necessarily to an Associate of Science and Arts Degree, are designed to accommodate the academic needs of these students.
