  • Northwestern Michigan College serves over 50,000 learners annually—through academic credit programs, noncredit personal interest classes. organizational training, and cultural activities.
  • The 2005 NMC Service Effectiveness Survey showed that:
    • 95% of learners were satisfied that overall, NMC is a good place to meet one's educational goals or learning objectives.
    • 96% of learners indicate that they are on track for achieving their educational goal.
    • 89% were satisfied that their learning experience improves their ability to think critically.
    • 89% were satisfied that their learning experience improves their ability to communicate ideas.
    • 89% were satisfied that NMC is a good value for the money.
    • 85% were satisfied that the tuition they pay is a worthwhile investment.
  • 97% of NMC graduates said they accomplished their educational goal in the 2005 NMC Graduate Survey.
  • 96% of NMC transfer students said they accomplished their educational goal in the 2006 NMC Transfer Survey.
  • The NMC University Center offers over 50 bachelor's completion and advanced degree and certificate programs from 10 Michigan colleges and universities. Since its inception in 1995, the University Center has served over 10,000 students and conferred 3,000 degrees.
  • NMC is home to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, one of six maritime academies in the country and the nation's only freshwater academy. The Academy trains men and women to serve as business professionals and Merchant Marine officers aboard Great Lakes and ocean ships.
  • The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College is the region's premier cultural facility offering both major exhibitions in the arts and sciences and live performances in jazz, blues, folk and world music by national and international artists. The museum averages 60,000 visits a year, holds one of the largest and most historically complete collections of Inuit art in the United States, and won the Governor's Arts Award for Arts and Culture in 2000.
  • Over 10,000 students participated in noncredit classes in 2005 through the NMC Extended Educational Services program, including classes in professional development, technology, wellness, arts and much more.
  • In 2005, NMC received a $450,000 Michigan Energy Efficiency Grant to establish an Energy Demonstration Center at its Michigan Technical Education Center to help train construction workers in energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.
  • More than 30 students from outside of the United States are enrolled for the 2006-07 year. Countries represented include England, Poland, Italy, Mexico, Turkey, Morocco, France, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Serbia, Israel, South Korea, China, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Bahamas, Panama, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Canada, Germany, Botswana.
  • NMC Rogers Observatory is the region's only observatory - it rests atop a natural hillside on five acres south of Traverse City.
  • The 2005 Academic Student Survey showed that:
    • 51% of learners plan to transfer as their primary goal.
    • 34% stated that their primary goal was to get an NMC degree or certificate.
  • NMC's Culinary Arts Program at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute is one of 100 programs accredited by the American Culinary Federation, out of 800 such programs in the country.
  • NMC was one of the first generic associate degree nursing programs in the country to offer an online option for nursing students.
  • The NMC Aviation Program has been training pilots since 1967 with graduates flying professionally worldwide.
  • NMC's Hagerty Center located at the Great Lakes Campus is a premier waterfront, state-of-the-art conference center for local, regional, national and international groups, featuring state-of-the-art, 380-seat conference and exhibition facilities.
  • NMC's Bridge Program was one of the first 25 programs in the U.S. It received a Bellwether Award in 2003 as one of 10 community college programs formed to promote community and economic development, and it received an Outstanding Educator Award in 2003 by the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • NMC has one of the largest foundations of any community college in the nation, with assets of over $22 million, which are designated for student scholarships, buildings and equipment, and operational support.
  • The NMC Foundation awards more scholarship dollars to more students than any other community college in Michigan.
  • The annual NMC Barbecue is the largest and most successful community picnic ever staged by a community college-welcoming 10,000 people to the campus every spring and raising over $1.3 million since it began in 1956.
  • NMC's 14-piece outdoor sculpture collection represents one of the largest collections of public art on a community college campus in the state.
  • Each August, the college hosts the NMC Scholarship Open Golf Tournament to raise money for honors scholarships, raising over $650,000 since its inception.
  • NMC has a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community colleges, with over 100 members.
  • NMC has one of the lowest default rates (5.5 percent) on student loans among Michigan Community Colleges, ranking tenth out of 28 colleges.
  • The accumulated contribution of past and present NMC instruction adds some $353.7 million in regional income to the current economy of the Grand Traverse region.
  • NMC returns more to taxpayers than it costs: Every dollar of state or local tax money invested in NMC today returns $3.
  • The greater Grand Traverse region economy receives roughly $17.9 million in regional income annually due to NMC operations and capital spending.
  • The average earnings of a student with an NMC Associate Degree are more than one-third higher than a student with a high school diploma.
