Research Highlights - Spring 2008

  • Motivation and Professional Lifestyle:
    • 40% of adjuncts describe themselves as professionals employed full-time outside of teaching
    • 23% of adjuncts describe themselves as employed in multiple part-time professional positions
    • 19% of adjuncts describe themselves as retired or nearing retirement and teach for fun
    • 15% of adjuncts describe themselves as building potential for pursuing academia full-time
  • Adjuncts with more experience at NMC did not differ significantly from adjuncts with less NMC experience in their opinions on the survey, however, the focus group results do demonstrate differences in the experiences of these two demographics
  • 91% of adjuncts reported being satisfied or very satisfied overall with their job
  • 84% of adjuncts agreed they would recommend an adjunct position at NMC to others
  • Nearly all the adjuncts reported that faculty and staff in their respective academic areas support them very well
  • Frequency of feedback on teaching was rated less positively and was a major area of concern in the focus group sessions
  • “Course Planning” ranked as the most beneficial topic for an adjunct orientation
