Osterlin Library Policies

Access to Library Records
The Osterlin Library staff adheres to the following obligations regarding access to library records:

In all cases, a library record may only be provided to the person identified in that record.

Book Returns
Books may be returned in book returns at the following NMC locations:

  • Library's front entrance
  • Drive-up box behind the Library
  • University Center Zonta Library

Display and Exhibits
As an educational and cultural institution and as part of its public service, the NMC Mark and Helen Osterlin Library offers exhibits and displays of interest, information, and enlightenment to the college and greater Traverse City community. The primary purpose of these displays is to promote libraries, librarianship, and research in the pursuit of lifelong learning. The library has a display case just inside the front doors of the building.

Government Documents

We offer the general public free access to online Federal Government information as provided through the Federal Depository Library Program.

Intellectual Freedom
The Osterlin Library adheres to the principles outlined in the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and the Association of College & Research Libraries' Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries. The Library is open to use by all members of the public including minors; however, our primary obligation is to meet the needs of the students, staff, and faculty of Northwestern Michigan College.

Journals and Magazines
The loan period for most magazines is one week. Copying machines are available; cost is 10¢ per page.

Loan Periods
The loan period on most books and government documents is three weeks. NMC students, area adults and local high school students may renew their loans for an additional three weeks provided no other library patrons have placed a hold on any items. If a hold has been placed, the item must be returned at the end of the loan period.

Overdue books and Fines
Fines are applied for overdue or lost items, and fines may also be levied for damaged books.

  • Overdue: 20¢ per day per book up to a maximum of $10.00 per book.
  • Lost: Published price plus $10.00 if in print; $25 minimum if out of print.

Renewals
Renewals may be placed by phone; call 231-995-1060 and have both your NMC library card and your books nearby to provide us with the barcode numbers on each.
