Selected Resources in Literary Criticism

Literary criticism is the scholarly evaluation, analysis, or interpretation of literary works - either specific works or an author's work as a whole. This guide is intended as a starting point for locating reference books, books, journal articles, and websites.

WebCat

WebCat is the online book catalog for Osterlin Library. Since you are looking for biographical and critical information about the author and their works, you might simply do a subject search on the author's name and browse the items listed.

Also, good keyword search phrases that locate literary criticism include the author's last name or title of a work combined with the word criticism. For example:

  • Cather AND criticism
  •  Hamlet AND criticism

To find biographical information about an author, do a keyword search on the author's last name and the subject term biography. For example:

  • Kerouac AND biography

Context: You might also want to broaden your search and look for books that cover the literary movement or historical background or a general theme of your chosen literary work or author. For example:

  • Beat generation
  • Harlem Renaissance
  • Women AND literature
  • Love AND literature
