Admissions Requirements, Application and Procedures

Admissions Requirements

Admission to Great Lakes Maritime Academy requires candidates meet the following:

  • Be at least 17 years of age with a high school diploma or GED.
  • United States Citizen or possess an Alien Registration Card (Green Card).
  • Academic placement at Freshman English and Intermediate College Algebra level determined by minimum ACT score of 20, SAT score of 1440, transferrable college credits or COMPASS testing.
  • United States Coast Guard physical, vision and moral character standards as established by federal law and all requirements for licensing as a United States Merchant Marine Officer. The Merchant Mariner Credential Medical Evaluation Report Physical Examination Report should be completed (please review the General Physical Requirements Physical Examination Report first) and forwarded to the Academy in addition to the online application (below).

Application Checklist (note: 2010 Class filling quickly, schedule your campus visit soon)

  • A complete application includes the following:
    • Great Lakes Maritime Application (opens into a new window)
      1. Be sure to click "Submit Now" after completing the entire application.
      2. Save Login ID and PIN to log in and verify which application materials have been received by the Admissions Department.
    • Official copies of high school transcripts if less than 48 college credits.
    • Official copies of college transcripts from all schools attended.
    • ACT or SAT test results if within 5 years. ACT school code:1978 - SAT school code:1564
    • Original Merchant Marine Personnel Physical Examination Report
    • Two professional letters of recommendation with contact information.
    • If Veteran, Undeleted DD-214, Armed Services Discharge Report.
    • Schedule your campus visit.

Admissions Process

  1. Complete and submit all application materials. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the Academy has received all required admissions materials.
  2. Completed applications are reviewed by the Great Lakes Maritime Academy Director of Admissions. Acceptance is competitive. Admission decisions will be made without regard to age, sex, marital status, national origin, or ethnic/racial background
  3. Upon notification of acceptance, prospective Maritime Cadets are required to submit a $500 (non-refundable) deposit to reserve a position in the incoming class. This $500 amount will be applied toward a cadet's initial order of uniforms.

Campus Visit/Interview

As part of the admissions process a campus visit/interview is required. The Academy is pleased to provide information about local accommodations and travel options to the Grand Traverse Area. Admissions department personnel are available by appointment Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 3 pm.

Financial Aid

Cadets are encouraged to apply for financial aid (federal, state, grants, scholarships and loans) after January 1st. Apply online using the Free Application for Student Federal Aid (FAFSA) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov (opens in a new window).

  • Four Year Bachelor's degree program requires both 002260 (Ferris State University) and 002302 (Maritime/NMC) school codes.
  • Those entering with a Bachelor's degree are only required to enter the 002302 (Maritime/NMC) school code.
