Academy Costs

The following explanations pertain to the four pages of Academy costs:

  • Classes — Billing applies to total credit or contact hours, whichever is larger. For example: The Survival at Sea Class (MDK-100) is a 1 credit class with 2 contacts. Therefore, your billing applies to the 2 contacts, the greater number.
  • Textbooks — Cost of textbooks fluctuate each semester.
  • Uniforms — This figure does not include blue jeans, steel toe boots or shoes. Any other optional clothing purchases are not included in figures listed.
  • First Aid — For Engineers, the CPR requirement must be met in the cadet's last year as the card must be current when writing the USCG license.
  • Firefighting — The firefighting costs are $125 for the registration fee to be paid upon the arrival at the MARAD fire training school in Toledo. The remaining $275 is a estimate for transportation, lodging, and food expenses during your week-long stay. Car pooling is encouraged. (Prior Navy firefighting schools are NOT a substitute.)
  • Ferris State University Tuition — All maritime academy cadets are considered in-state residents for tuition purposes, a tremendous savings.
