Great Lakes Maritime Academy Scholarships

Scholarships for the Great Lakes Maritime Academy are awarded by the Maritime Scholarship Committee. Additional information and details for applying for these awards may be obtained from the Maritime office.

Biederman Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 scholarships awarded from a grant from the Les and Anne Biederman Foundation to students in Maritime, Nursing and Business. Recipients must have at least a 2.0 grade point average and be fullor part-time. Preference will be given to those verifying they are participating in clinical or shipboard experiences.

George S. Biros, Jr. Maritime Academy Scholarship – an award of $500 for a Maritime Academy student with a 3.0 grade point average who demonstrates financial need.

Chris and April Branson Maritime Scholarship – one $500 award made to support Maritime students with at least a 2.0 grade point average. Applicants have to be second-year, returning students taking twelve or more credits. Demonstration of financial need is required.

Arthur W. Brophy Memorial Scholarship – awards of various amounts open to students in the Maritime program who are enrolled full time.

Grand Traverse Bay Power Squadron Maritime Scholarship – second, third and fourth year cadets in NMC’s Maritime program with full-time cadet status (5 or more credits) and a minimum 2.5 grade point average are eligible to apply for this $500 minimum award. Eligible cadets must have successfully completed the first sea project experience.

Great Lakes Maritime Academy Superintendent’s Scholarship – varying awards to first-year cadets demonstrating financial need and having supporting outside recommendations. A short essay is required.

Great Lakes Maritime Task Force Scholarship – a $500 award to a U.S. citizen who demonstrates excellence in communicating the importance of cabotage laws to legislators and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Financial need will be considered if there are equally qualified applicants.

Great Lakes Passenger Boat Association Scholarship – Preference for this $500 award will go to a Maritime student whose family owns or is employed in the passenger boating business; second preference will be given to a fourth year Maritime student demonstrating financial need. Recipients may be taking any number of credit hours and there is no residency requirement.

Maxine V. Hurley Memorial Scholarship – an award of varying amounts for a full-time cadet with at least a 2.0 grade point average who is in the third year of the Engine Officer program. This award is for the fall semester. Financial need is considered if there are equally qualified applicants.

Christian P. Kamm Scholarship – several $1,000 scholarships for second-year Deck Program cadets who have at least a 3.3 grade point average.

Gordon Lightfoot Maritime Scholarship – several awards of up to $2,000 to cadets with a minimum 3.2 grade point average. Selections are based on academic standing and overall performance as a cadet. A short essay is required.

Captain Lewis Ludington Scholarship – awards of approximately $1,000 to second-year cadets who have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and have displayed exemplary traits of leadership, cooperation with classmates, professional excellence, and participation in Academy sponsored projects. Financial need will be considered for equally qualified applicants.

Marine Engineers Beneficial Association GLMA Scholarship – second, third and fourth year cadets in NMC’s Maritime program are eligible for several scholarships of $1,000 or more. A 3.0 grade point average, demonstration of financial need, and a completed application are also required.

Maritime Heritage Alliance Scholarship – scholarship support will be provided to a future GLMA cadet who is a band member of the Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin.

George W. Raymond Memorial Maritime Scholarship – Maritime Engine cadets may apply for this scholarship of $500 or more through the GLMA program. Those with State of Michigan residency status, a 2.75 grade point average, and demonstrated financial need are eligible.

Franklin Sears Memorial Maritime Scholarship Fund – Several awards for full-time cadets with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Awards are made on the basis of academic achievement, participation in Academy activities, and demonstrated financial need.

Captain Ray Skelton Memorial Maritime Scholarship – This award was established in 2006 as a memorial to Captain Ray Skelton who was a past grand president of International Shipmaster's Association, past chairman of American Association of Port Authorities Harbors, Navigation and Environment Committee, past president of the Propeller Club of the United States-Twin Port Chapter, and a former director and instructor of the Association Maritime Officers School of Navigation.  An award of varying amounts for a Senior Deck Cadet with minimum GPA 2.0 (GPA 3.0 in navigation, seamanship and shiphandling courses recommended but not required).  Preference given to cadet with commercial maritime experience over an individual with higher grades.  Not need based..

Barbara Thompson Maritime Scholarship – GLMA cadets are invited to apply for scholarships of varying amounts through the Maritime Program. Those enrolled for 6 or more credit hours are eligible and financial need will be considered for those equally qualified.

Admiral Paul E. Trimble Maritime Endowment Scholarship – varying awards for second, third, or fourth year cadets.
