About the Great Lakes Maritime Academy

Our program is unique among other state maritime academies. Great Lakes Maritime is designated as a regional maritime academy and the nations only freshwater academy. Upon graduation, our mariners are qualified to sail the Great Lakes or Oceans and are awarded both a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and an Associate's in Maritime Technology. This dual degree combination offers employers the finest maritime personnel who are also fully compliant with STCW 95 standards.

Successful cadets will be qualified to take the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) examination for a Third Mate Great Lakes or Oceans Unlimited Tonnage, First Class Pilot Great Lakes(Deck Program) or Third Assistant Engineer, Steam and Motor Vessels of any Horsepower (Engineering Program). Cadets are part of the student body of NMC and may choose to live in resident halls with other students. They are not required to follow a rigid military schedule. They are, however, required to meet academic standards and demonstrate the self-discipline, leadership, and ships' officer qualities required in the exercise of good seamanship and engineering practices.

Engineering Officer TrainingAll cadets are required to abide by the Cadet Rules and Regulations. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy reserves the right to revise the program in accordance with industry needs and government agency requirements.

The Maritime Program is approved by the United States Maritime Administration, the United States Coast Guard, the Michigan Department of Education and is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
