The days of a cadet are busy and rewarding. The combination of academics, lab time and shipboard training create an exciting hands-on approach to maritime education. Cadets are part of the student body of Ferris State University and follow the semester schedule of the main campus. In addition, cadets either sail during summer semester or take additional classes. Most evenings and weekends are free and many cadets find part-time work opportunities either on or off campus.

At the Academy cadets are to be in uniform at all times. While in lab situations or aboard ship safety gear and appropriate uniforms will be required. While attending classes on another campus or in residence halls uniforms are optional. The Academy educates in a professional manner and cadets do not follow a rigid military schedule. They are, however, required to meet academic standards and demonstrate the self-discipline and leadership qualities expected of a Merchant Marine Officer. Living arrangements are at the discretion of the cadet, unless they are under 20 years of age. This group of cadets will be required to live one year in a residence hall. Cadets over 20 years of age may also request to live in a residence hall or campus apartment if they desire. Living on campus promotes group study among the cadets.

While attending our maritime college, cadets secure friendships that last a lifetime. There are many clubs and organizations at the Academy and on main campus for you to become involved. Automobiles are allowed on campus, and all the recreational opportunities of northern Michigan are readily available. Explore all the State and National Parks that lie minutes from our campus. The natural beauty of our region, with hundreds of rivers and lakes, offer an outdoor enthusiast endless opportunities.

The Academy provides a unique college education that leads directly to employment in an industry that is the essence of pride and tradition. International travel, STCW '95 standards, hands-on career training and comprehensive academics create a learning environment that delivers more than a typical college education. Maritime cadets take pride in being part of a college with high expectations.
