Maritime Campus and Harbor

Great Lakes Maritime Academy was formed in 1969 with the purpose of educating and training the finest mates (pilots) and engineers available to the commercial shipping industry. The Academy has been in Traverse City on the shores Grand Traverse Bay since that time. Over the years numerous improvements in technology, facilities and Training Ships have occured.

We moved into our new maritime facility in 2003 and it has exceeded the expectations of everyone. The harbor was completely rebuilt and expanded to better accommodate the T/S State of Michigan and our smaller vessels. With the harbor completed in the spring of 2005, the Academy had a new home with the stern of our ship only 150 feet from our building. Located to the immediate east and west of our harbor are parks with recreational equipment and swimming beaches that are open to the public.The Academy is located in one of the premier tourist destinations in the country, and the outdoor recreation opportunities offer possibilities for everyone.
