Great Lakes Maritime Academy was formed in
1969 with the purpose of educating and training the finest Mates
(Pilots) and engineers available to the commercial shipping industry.
The academy has been in Traverse City on the shores Grand Traverse
Bay since that time. Over the years numerous improvements in technology,
facilities and Training Ships have been implemented, however, none
more comprehensive than the changes started fall of 2001.
Maritime
began demolition of its former buildings in the early fall of 2001.
Our college moved into temporary quarters in the summer of 2002
while construction continued of our new maritime campus. During
this period of time, the T/S State of Michigan provided additional
classroom and lab environments that allowed us to remain on site
during the entire construction process. We moved into our new maritime
facility late fall of 2003 and it exceeded everyone expectations.
With the final details addressed, we once again began construction,
focusing on a new maritime harbor in 2004. The harbor was completely
rebuilt and expanded to better accommodate the T/S State of Michigan
and our smaller vessels. With the harbor completed in spring of
2005, Maritime had its new home.
