Great Lakes Maritime Academy's sailing team competes in regattas across the nation. As a member of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, our team welcomes the tough competion and travel that is part of being a sailing team member. The Academy's training waters are outside the maritime harbor in West Grand Traverse Bay. We are looking for cadets who are up for a challenge. From racing in small boat regattas, to competing aboard larger vessels, our crew is always ready to get their feet wet.
Requirements to Compete
You must be a maritime cadet in good standing and attending the Academy full-time to join the sail team. There is no distinction between the Deck and Engineering programs, all true competitors are equal. To travel and compete you must be registered with the ICSA and not have sailed competitively for more than 5 years.
Regatta Report
2009 Regatta Report - The Great Lakes Maritime Academy Sail Team is ready for another year of competitive collegiate sailing. Last year was a great success for the team with accomplishments of growing to nearly twice the original size from only two years prior and having the opportunity to host our first regatta. The Admiral's Cup was held on our home waters of Grand Traverse Bay here at the Academy this past November. Last year the regatta initially drew only one other team, but this year, at least three other teams are scheduled to attend. We will again be attending our most important regatta, the Sheilds Trophy Regatta. This prestigious race is held each fall at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where only select service academies are invited to sail on the Naval Academy's 44 foot sloops in Chesapeake Bay. This regatta is one of the most exciting and intense regattas on our schedule and we look forward to attending every year. From the previous year, we improved two places and we expect to do even better this year.
Our other races are also important to advancing the sailing ability of our team. Because of this, the regatta schedule has changed a bit from the past two years in order to allow us to visit new schools and sail under different conditions. Some of the more interesting new regattas are The Ohio State Intersectional which will be held in Cleveland, Ohio on Lake Erie. Another new regatta is the Wisconsin Regatta which is unique in that it includes a singlehanded race along with the traditional two-person teams.
We are always looking for new enthusiasm on the team and welcome your interest.
