One-Day Radar Observer Renewal is a Coast Guard approved exam in which the candidate will be tested on radar fundamentals, determining course and speed of other vessels and collision avoidance. The one day course has limited time to practice rapid radar collision avoidance plotting.
The first day covers the radar plotting and collision avoidance process in detail. This course is recommended for those that need more practice with collision avoidance plotting. The second day is the same as the One-Day Radar Renewal.
This course covers radar theory, observation, operation and use, interpretation and plotting, advanced Radar plotting, collision avoidance, and navigational exercises. Approved by the U.S. Coast Guard
This four-day course presents the principles and operation of Automatic Radar Plotting Aids. It includes the legal aspects of ARPA including IMO and USCG standards, the theory of input and processing characteristics of ARPA, the theory of operation, control functions and adjustments, the acquisition and tracking of contacts, the limitations of and potential errors of ARPA and special ARPA related features.
Approved by the U.S. Coast Guard (Prerequisite: Radar Observer Unlimited Course)
This course will train the mariner in both practical use in survival craft and the theory of survival craft with regards to construction and outfitting. The successful student will receive a certificate from Great Lakes Maritime Academy that is recognized by the United State Coast Guard and will entitle that person the rating of "Lifeboatman" to be placed on their Merchant Mariner Document.
This course will train the mariner in various topics that an AB should be competent in, for example: basic firefighting, marlin spike, regulations, rules of the road and other topics applicable. The successful student will receive a certificate from Great Lakes Maritime Academy that is recognized by the United State Coast Guard and will entitle that person the rating of "Able Seaman" to be placed on their Merchant Mariner Document.
An 11-day course to prepare mariners to qualify for rated (unlicensed) engine room positions. The course covers basic equipment theory and watch standing practices. Upon successful completion, the candidate will receive a certificate from Great Lakes Maritime Academy that is recognized by the United States Coast Guard that will entitle that person the rating of "Q-MED" (Oiler, Fireman, Water Tender) to be placed on their Merchant Mariner Document.
