The U.S. Naval Reserve/Merchant Marine Reserve (USNR/MMR) program exists to train new officers for service both in the Navy and the U.S. Merchant Marine simultaneously.

USNR Honor Guard

The program is administered by the Dept. of Naval Science, and is similar to programs in place at the California, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, and Maine Maritime academies, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY

Students

The program is open to all students who are participating in Coast Guard unlimited License program. Students normally apply and start Naval Science training at the beginning of their freshman year.

Training

In addition to their academic courses midshipmen take two Naval Science courses, MNS 100 and 200. They wear prescribed navy uniforms during military labs, drills, military science presentations, and other practical training activities. These programs offer a taste of military life, and round out a candidate's military training.

Scholarships

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is presently funding a Student Incentive Payment (SIP) of $4,000 annually to offset school costs.

To qualify for SIP MMR students must be physically qualified, complete Naval Science courses and participate in all battalion drills and activities. Students may participate in the MMR program without receiving SIP.
