Great Lakes Maritime Academy Harbor

The Academy harbor, originally dedicated October 23, 1972, received a total renovation during the fall of 2004 and spring of 2005. Improvements in the harbor design reflect the additional needs of the T/S State of Michigan while providing better access for the cadets and public. The large steel structure on the northwest corner of the harbor is the old aftermast from our training ship. This forty foot structure, removed from the ship prior to our recent shipyard modifications, supports a large green harbor light. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy Alumni Association provided funding for this light structure and it has been appropriately named "Alumni Light".

State of Michigan In the Maritime Academy Harbor

The harbor is a secure area for our smaller vessels. The Maritime Academy Sailing Team operates a fleet of sailboats to sharpen their skills on Grand Traverse Bay. The Sailing Team enjoys intercollegiate competitions across the country. Within close proximity are a number of recreational harbors and yacht clubs that organize additional sailing events throughout the season.
