NMC Concert Band presents Dances for Band April 27

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Northwestern Michigan College’s Community Concert Band will present a performance of “Dances for Band” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in Milliken Auditorium

Under the direction of conductor Tom Riccobono, Interlochen Arts Academy instructor, the band will perform works by John Barnes Chance, William Schuman, Eric Whitacre, Eric Ewazen, Paul Basler and Julius Fucik.

Riccobono will also perform a solo with the band: 'Dances' for Trombone and Band, composed by Paul Basler. Basler spent a sabbatical studying African rhythms and percussion instruments in Africa and subsequently began to incorporate these elements into his compositions. The program is as follows:

  • “The Star-Spangled Banner,” John Stafford Smith, arr. Jack Stamp
  • “Amparito Roca,” Jaime Texidor, arr. Aubrey Winter
  • Dances for Trombone and Wind Ensemble, Paul Basler
  • “Cloudburst,” Eric Whitacre
  • “Incantation and Dance,” John Barnes Chance
  • “Hymn for the Lost and the Living,” Eric Ewazen
  • “George Washington Bridge,” William Schuman
  • “Florentiner March,” Julius Fucik, arr. M.L. Lake, ed. Frederick Fennell

The NMC Community Concert Band was formed in 1973 and now totals more than 50 members. It is comprised of young, energetic high school and college students learning side-by-side with experienced adults. The band is a member of the Association of Concert Bands. Rehearsals are weekly throughout the academic year, with performances held primarily at Milliken Auditorium.
