Whitman discusses nuclear energy policy at NMC April 29

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Former U.S. EPA Administrator and New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman will speak about nuclear power in Michigan and U.S. energy policy at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the Hagerty Center on Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus.

Gov. Whitman’s appearance is free and open to the public. Her visit is presented by the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy Coalition), an organization consisting of more than 1,500 members, including individuals and businesses, plus environmental, academic, consumer and labor groups that support nuclear energy. DTE Energy, a member of the CASEnergy Coalition, is a co-sponsor. The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and NMC are co-hosting the event.

There will be opportunity for questions and dialogue with Gov. Whitman following her remarks.

According to the CASEnergy website (www.cleansafeenergy.org) the organization believes “that nuclear energy can improve energy security, ensure clean air quality, and enhance the quality of life and economic well-being of all Americans.” Whitman co-chairs the organization and travels frequently to promote the inclusion of  nuclear energy as part of a responsible, clean energy portfolio. The other co-chair is Dr. Patrick Moore, co-founder and former leader of Greenpeace.

A Republican with four decades of political experience, Gov. Whitman served in the cabinet of President George W. Bush as Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency from 2001 to 2003. Before that, she served for seven years as governor of New Jersey, the first woman elected to that position in state history. She is now president of the Whitman Strategy Group, a consulting firm that specializes in government relations and environmental and energy issues.
