International Affairs Forum subscriptions now available
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Subscriptions to the 2008-09 season of the International Affairs Forum at Northwestern Michigan College are now available.
The eight-part series brings diplomats, policy makers, journalists and others from all over the globe to Milliken Auditorium for monthly lectures beginning Sept. 18 with a discussion of “A Fresh Look at Afghanistan.” All programs begin with a reception in the Sculpture Court of the Dennos Museum Center at 5:15 p.m. and are followed at 6 p.m. by the lecture and a discussion period in Milliken Auditorium. All current educators and students are admitted free.
Two levels of Forum membership are available:
- Subscribers pay $125 and receive 16 tickets good for any lecture
- Patrons pay $300 and, in addition to the 16 tickets, receive recognition at each lecture and an opportunity to have dinner with the speaker.
To the extent allowed by law, contributions may be claimed as a charitable tax deduction to the NMC Foundation. For tickets or information, call NMC Extended Education at 231-995-1700. Topics and speakers currently scheduled include:
- September 18: “A Fresh Look at Afghanistan.” Speaker Thomas E. Gouttierre, dean of International Studies and Programs at the. University of Nebraska at Omaha, lived and worked in Afghanistan for nearly ten years as a Peace Corps volunteer, Fulbright Fellow, and coach of the Afghan national basketball team. He later served as a senior political advisor for the U.N. peacekeeping mission to Afghanistan from 1996-1997.
- October 16: “The Palestinian - Israeli Conflict.” Speaker Christina Michelmore is a member of the History department at Chatham University in Pittsburgh. She spent seven years working and living in the Middle East in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Pakistan. Dr. Michelmore regularly writes op-ed articles on American foreign policy in the Middle East.
- November 20: “U.S. Foreign Policy Under A New President.” Speaker to be determined.
Topics and speakers for the remainder of the series are being selected. Lecture dates in 2009 are Feb. 19, March 19, April 16, May 21 and June 18. Individual lecture tickets are $10 each.
