'Body of War' screening free to students Aug. 27Traverse City, MI – NMC will continue its monthly sponsorship of a free movie for students at the State Theatre with a 7 p.m. showing of “Body of War” Wednesday, Aug. 27. “Body of War” is a documentary chronicling the story of Tomas Young, an American soldier paralyzed after serving less than a week in Iraq. When he returns to the U.S. and as he comes to terms with his disability, Young becomes an anti-war activist – even as his brother continues to serve in Iraq. The movie, which was also shown at the Traverse City Film Festival, will be introduced by NMC political science instructor Dr. John Zachman, who will also lead a discussion after the film. “As an institution of higher learning we must promote the idea that through free dialogue we all advance in knowledge. We all benefit from politically thoughtful films, no matter what the political bent of the argument,” said Zachman. NMC began sponsoring free monthly movies for students at the State Theatre in June. Volunteer student ambassadors and NMC faculty and staff are on hand to usher, serve concessions, facilitate the discussion and answer questions about NMC. The free screenings are open to students of any grade level (as appropriate for the individual movie rating), and seating is on a first-come first-serve basis. The general public is welcome to attend the same screening by paying the regular admission price. “Body of War” is unrated, however, potential viewers and their parents are cautioned that the movie does contain a graphic medical scene and strong language. The NMC Free Film Movie selection will be announced each month at www.statetheatretc.org.
