NMC hosts seminar on alcohol useTRAVERSE CITY - Finding out if a person's alcohol use is an addiction is sometimes difficult. Northwestern Michigan College will hold a half-day seminar titled "Problem Drinking—Addiction or Choice?" on Thursday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.Nationally known lecturer, Gregory Boothroyd, PhD, CAAC, LPC, connects self-defeating behavior theory with problem drinking assessment and treatment to differentiate between addiction (bio-chemical conditions people have) and self-defeating behavior (choices people make). The session will include the progression of symptoms from use to misuse, abuse, and dependency; practical assessment tools; stages of denial; effective intervention strategies; and useful exercises to promote life-generating alternatives. The seminar is designed for the community as well as professionals in the areas of mental health, addictions counseling, school counseling, nursing, social work, courts and corrections, clergy, teachers, and related professions. Three continuing education units (CEUs) are available (MCBAP approved). Boothroyd is the author of Going Home—A Positive Guide for Promoting Life-Generating Behaviors, and Professor Emeritus of Western Michigan University where he served as Professor of Counseling and Director of University Substance Abuse Services.
