NASA ambassador to lead doomsday discussion Aug. 8

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Astronomer and NASA ambassador Michael Foerster will lead an “out of this world” exploration of what-ifs at an Aug. 8 summer LIFE Lunch Forum sponsored by Northwestern Michigan College’s Extended Education division.

Participants in “What If? Astronomical doomsday scenarios” will consider questions like:

  • What would happen to the Earth if a massive star exploded nearby?
  • What if an asteroid or comet hit the Earth?
  • Could little green men invade our planet?
  • What about the “Big Rip” at the end of the universe?

Look at astronomical doomsday scenarios, implications for humanity and life, and the probability of such events. Examine the death of stars including our own sun and investigate the possibility that a large object could make a "deep impact" on the earth. How will the Earth end? Enjoy a picnic-fare buffet lunch before this edge-of-the-seat experience.

“What if?” will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8. The $25 fee includes a buffet lunch and materials. To register call 995-1700 or visit the NMC University Center, Suite 102.
