Renewable energy degrees to be offered Spring 2010

September 29, 2009

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Northwestern Michigan College will offer two new degrees and certificates in renewable energy technology following Monday’s unanimous approval by the Board of Trustees to offer the new programs. Beginning in the spring semester 2010 an Associate of Applied Science degree and a Level II certificate option will be available for each of the following areas:

NMC is well-positioned to offer the new programs, having offered renewable energy classes on a non-credit basis since 2001. These classes currently draw students from across the country and internationally. In 2004, NMC received $500,000 in state grant funds to build what is one of eight Michigan Energy Demonstration Centers statewide. Located at the Aero Park campus, it showcases technologies used in the renewable/alternative energy industries.

The new for-credit options build on the current renewable energy technologies certificates and expertise already in place at NMC, giving students the option of short-term training up through a two-year credential. The “hands-on” courses will be limited to 15 students to ensure adequate individual attention.

Resources students will have access to include:

  • Mobile solar photovoltaic lab
  • Two wind turbines - University Center and Aero Park campuses
  • Geothermal heat pump lab
  • Solar thermal system
  • Grid-interconnected 8 kw, solar photovoltaic array
  • 1,200 sq. ft building sciences structure
