TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- NMC volunteers Bruce Byl and Susan Sheldon have been named winners of the 2009 Council for Resource Development's Campus Impact Award in the volunteer category.

The Campus Impact awards recognize the efforts of individuals or teams who have made a significant positive impact on a community college and the students it serves. Byl and Sheldon were nominated for their work as NMC Annual  Community Campaign co-chairs in 2007-2009. The Annual Community Campaign provides more than 400 scholarships annually and funds grants for innovation and program enhancement.

During the two campaigns they led, NMC volunteers achieved progressively higher fundraising goals, despite a challenging economy. In addition, Byl and Sheldon increased total donors to the campaign by 32 percent, new donors by 96 percent, and alumni participation by 530 percent. The resulting impact means more annual scholarships for students at a time when financial need is greatest, and an increased donor base for long-term support of NMC.

"We are honored that these two stellar volunteers are being given national recognition for their hard work, which has had an enormous impact on students and our communities," said Kathleen Guy, NMC Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

Both Byl and Sheldon serve on the board of the NMC Foundation. Byl, who is also an NMC alumnus (Class of '79), is vice-chair. Sheldon also is an elected member of the NMC Board of Trustees.

The award ceremony will take place in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 13, during the 43rd annual CRD conference. Also at the conference, longtime Northwestern Michigan College supporters Barbara and Dudley Smith will receive their Benefactors of the Year award from CRD. They were named among 10 national winners in June.

The Council for Resource Development, headquartered in Washington, D.C. encourages philanthropy to community colleges by supporting, strengthening and celebrating community college development professionals.
