november 3, 2009
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Coinciding with this month's 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which precipitated the demise of the Soviet Union, Ambassador Michael G. Wygant will speak on "Russia and the Former Soviet Republics in Central Asia" at an International Affairs Forum lecture Nov. 19.
Michael Wygant was in the U.S. State Department for 31 years, in many high level positions, especially in the USSR and in the Central Asia Republics (countries just north of Afghanistan and Pakistan, which were formerly part of the Soviet Union). He helped open the U.S. embassies in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. In addition, he served in Africa, Vietnam and Australia. Mr. Wygant was the first U.S. ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia. After retiring from the State Department, he held a number of positions with the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation, concentrating on Eastern Europe.
This is the third in an eight-part series sponsored by the International Affairs Forum. The presentation begins with a reception in the Sculpture Court of the Dennos Museum Center at 5:15 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by the lecture and a discussion period in Milliken Auditorium.
